This one needs an upload, and is deleted afterwards
Browsers cannot do this calculation, so the file goes to our server. It is deleted automatically 60 minutes after the job finishes, and the working copy lives in a memory filesystem that is wiped whenever the server restarts.
We do not log file names and do not log file contents — that is a hard rule in our engineering standards, not a setting.
What it does — and what it doesn't
When a transparent image goes to a format without transparency, the background becomes white, not black. That sounds trivial, but black is the classic failure in this kind of tool.
Animation frames are preserved between GIF, WebP, AVIF and PNG. Converting to a static format keeps only the first frame.
EPS and PS are deliberately unsupported. The library that reads them shells out to a component with an incompatible licence, so we removed them from the allowed list — a licensing decision, not a capability gap.
ICO has a size ceiling (256×256); larger images are scaled down.
Common questions
Is quality lost?
Not to PNG, BMP or LZW TIFF. Yes to JPEG and to lossy WebP or AVIF.
What is AVIF and should I use it?
A newer format with the smallest files at a given quality. Current browsers support it; use JPEG for very old software.
