Pick a tool (highlight / underline / strikethrough / arrow / sticky note) and draw on the page.
Download.
This one needs an upload, and is deleted afterwards
Browsers cannot do this calculation, so the file goes to our server. It is deleted automatically 60 minutes after the job finishes, and the working copy lives in a memory filesystem that is wiped whenever the server restarts.
We do not log file names and do not log file contents — that is a hard rule in our engineering standards, not a setting.
What it does — and what it doesn't
Text under a highlight remains selectable, copyable and searchable. Burning the colour into the content stream would be easier, but that amounts to editing someone else's document on their behalf.
Highlights come in five fixed colours. An unlimited palette leads people to pick shades dark enough to hide the words underneath.
This is not redaction. Annotations can be deleted and the text reappears. Use Redact and erase for that.
A few very simple readers do not display annotation objects; standard readers all do.
Common questions
Will the recipient see my marks?
In any standard reader, yes — and they can delete them. That is what annotation is for: a sticky note, not a rewrite.
Can I annotate a scan?
Arrows and sticky notes, yes. Highlighting needs text to attach to — make it a Searchable PDF first.
Are sticky notes a separate feature?
Same one. Notes and highlights are the same class of object; splitting them would only make people look in two places.
