This one needs an upload, and is deleted afterwards
Browsers cannot do this calculation, so the file goes to our server. It is deleted automatically 60 minutes after the job finishes, and the working copy lives in a memory filesystem that is wiped whenever the server restarts.
We do not log file names and do not log file contents — that is a hard rule in our engineering standards, not a setting.
What it does — and what it doesn't
Fidelity is as limited as PDF to Word — every line becomes its own text box, and paragraph and table structure is not preserved.
RTF is the most portable format and opens almost anywhere, but supports the least styling.
Scans need OCR first.
Government document exchange often specifies odt; but if the original file still exists, exporting from that is much cleaner.
Common questions
What is the difference between odt and docx?
odt is the open document format and LibreOffice's native one; public sector exchange often specifies it. What they can express is broadly the same.
Why can fidelity not be better?
A PDF has no paragraphs, only glyphs at coordinates. Every tool is guessing.
Is there a better approach?
To read it, use the PDF. To edit it, find the original. Use this when neither is possible.
