This one needs an upload, and is deleted afterwards
Browsers cannot do this calculation, so the file goes to our server. It is deleted automatically 60 minutes after the job finishes, and the working copy lives in a memory filesystem that is wiped whenever the server restarts.
We do not log file names and do not log file contents — that is a hard rule in our engineering standards, not a setting.
What it does — and what it doesn't
The layout re-flows; the original's columns are not preserved. That is the point — fixed layouts are painful on a small screen.
Images are kept, but they move with the text rather than staying in a particular corner of a particular page.
Scans cannot be converted — nothing to re-flow. Run OCR first.
Complex tables display poorly in EPUB; keep a PDF of anything important.
Common questions
Why not keep the original layout?
Re-flowing is the whole value of EPUB. If you want the layout preserved, PDF already is that format.
Will it work on a Kindle?
Recent Kindles read EPUB. Older ones may need Amazon's own converter.
Is the table of contents kept?
If the original has bookmarks, they become the EPUB's contents. If not, add them first with PDF bookmarks.
